PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

2003 – 2006

University of Michigan Law School

Attended the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor and graduated cum laude. Completed the Criminal Appellate Clinic and a fellowship with the Child Advocacy Clinic. Received the Law School’s Scholarly Writing Award and competed in the Campbell Moot Court. Interned with the Washtenaw Public Defender in Ann Arbor and Detroit’s Legal Aid and Defender.

2007 – 2008

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom – New York

Introduced to legal practice at one of the world's top firms, located at Times Square. Learned tips of the trade from the best lawyers in the field. Mostly worked on class-action antitrust matter and Federal Trade Commission antitrust discovery procedure. Opportunity for some small-scale pro bono, like an asylum matter for a Chinese journalist and a contract issue for an art museum.

2008 – 2010

Alaska Court of Appeals

Clerked two terms for the Alaska Court of Appeals. An extremely rewarding and enriching opportunity to work closely with Court of Appeals judges and to collaborate with very bright legal scholars and practitioners. Endless research and writing. Prepared criminal appellate memoranda, technical review and editing for publication, worked on dozens, if not hundreds, of legal decisions.

2010 – 2016

Alaska Public Defender Agency

Represented hundreds of criminal defendants and handled dozens of criminal trials. Learned from some of the most experienced trial attorneys around at one of the nation’s best public defense organizations. Unique opportunity to ride circuit through the Alaska wilderness. Practiced in towns on and off the road system. Criminal and family law representation for indigent clients.

2016 –

Law Office of Michael Horowitz

A general practice law office in Kingsley, Michigan. Opened doors to the Michigan public at 108 E. Main Street in Kingsley in September 2017.
